Memorial to the Author of the First Flag of Latvia Jānis Lapiņš Manors, museums & monuments

“Pintuļi”, Veselavas pagasts, Cēsu novads

The national flag of Latvia was born during the First World War. The teacher and journalist Jānis Lapiņš made a drawing of the red-white-red flag, which was later sewed by his former pupil, a teacher at Valmiera refugee shelter, Marianna Straumane in the second half of 1916. It is the first known Latvian national flag, actually made and preserved to our days.
